General FAQs on DIN and DSC

1.  Does DIN need to be renewed?
Ans:  DIN stands for Director’s Identification Number which is allotted to an individual who is an existing director or who intends to be appointed as director of a company. A regular DIN allotted to a person is valid for the life time and hence there is no need to renew DIN.
However, if there are any changes in the particulars of DIN of existing directors, then DIN 4 needs to be filed electronically so as to incorporate the changes in the MCA records. The requested change is taken into the system on verification of the proof enclosed with the application for change request.
For Example: If PAN of the DIN holder is not informed or date of birth, email id, Fathers name,
Permanent residential address etc. needs to be corrected, then DIN 4 is to be filed in order to incorporate the changes along with the proof of the changes.

2.  Does DSC need to be renewed?
Ans: Acquiring a DSC is the first step towards e – filing. It is simply a code allotted to the person signing the document or authenticating the transaction.
The applicant may either choose to obtain the Digital Signature Certificate of 1 year or 2 years validity from the date of issuance. After expiry of the validity period, the digital signature certificate becomes invalid and hence need to be renewed.
3.   DSC Class II vs. Class III?
Ans:  DSC of Class 2 and Class 3 category is issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) which needs to be obtained for e-filing of documents on the MCA Portal.
Class 2 certificates authenticate the person’s identity and provide assured encryption standards to maximize the security. In other words, the identity of a person is verified against a trusted, pre-verified database.
For an Individual:  Class 2 Individual Certificates enable one to digitally sign and electronically authenticate one’s identity. The extent of identification provided by this class of certificates is limited to the information available on the validating server.
For an Organization: Class 2 Organization Certificates; guarantee the accuracy of the information of the employees, associates and customers submitted to the organization. Moreover, in case of any change such as resignation of the employee or any alteration will nullify the validity of the certificate and hence need to be renewed.
Class 3 certificates issued to both an individual and organizations represent the highest degree of digital security available to them. In other words, this is the highest level where the person needs to physically present himself or herself in front of a Registration Authority (RA) and prove his/ her identity.
For an Individual:  Class 3 Individual Certificates are issued to individuals and provides highest level of security to them.
For an Organization: Class 3 Organization Certificates are issued digitally signing the documents, encryption, electronic access control, e-commerce and online financial transactions that authenticates the customer’s or the employer’s identity.
