Getting PAN Card in India by Foreign Nationals or Non Resident Indian

If you are an NRI or foreign national and you have a taxable income in India then buck up and get a PAN card. Okay, now even if you don’t have a taxable income but you are into share trading through broker or depository or you invest in mutual funds or are purchasing any land or property in India, then you need a PAN card issued by the Government of India. download (8)

Now, if you do not know how to get a PAN card keep on reading. It is quite simple to get a PAN card. All you need to do is visit this link https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/ and fill up the form 49A (for NRI) and form 49AA (foreign national). After filling the form you can see a confirmation screen. Make sure all the information is complete and correct and then submit the form. Now, you will get an online acknowledgement receipt; take a print out of that receipt. Now affix your photograph in the space provided in the acknowledgement. Care should be taken that the photographs meet the requirement of the IT department. Now, affix your signature (or thumb impression) in the space provided. All that you need to provide now is a proof of identity, proof of address, demand draft and two coloured photographs taken in white background.

The government charges for PAN in India is Rs. 96 along with service tax if you have a communication address in India and if the communication address is of foreign country then the government is Rs. 962 (comprising of application fee, tax and postage). This facility is available only for 99 countries as of now.

Make sure that your acknowledgement, demand draft and proofs reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application. If the payment has been made through demand draft or cheque (and not debit or credit card or net banking) then such applications are processed only on receipt of relevant proofs and realization of payment.

Make sure of filling the form in black ink and block letters. Sign at the appropriate place. The name in the form should match the name as appearing in the proofs. If you are a minor make sure your representative also submits the proof of his identity and address. Do not over write in the application form or use stapler or pins to affix the photograph. Don’t write the date along with signature.
